Getting Started with Chromebooks

Chromebook Rollout Guide & Checklist
A quick set-up guide to support first time Chromebook rollouts in CPS.

Prep:
  1. Wireless: You’ll need to manually enter the wireless network. When you’re entering it, you can click on the icon of the eye to see the password as you type.
  2. Enrollment: You need to enroll all of the Chromebooks into the CPS.edu domain BEFORE kids get them.
    1. CTRL-ALT-E
    2. Login with your CPS.edu email address
  3. Numbers on all Chromebooks: Please numerate the Chromebooks to help track them.
    1. Put sticker on the bottom
    2. Optional: “laminate it” with tape so the stickers don’t come off.
  4. Get all of the students' usernames and passwords by going to this site and entering your CPS credentials. Then click "Export user list to Excel". Their passwords are CpsXXXXXXXX with the last eight characters being their student ID number. (So if a student's ID is 12345678, then that student's password is Cps12345678.)
  5. If your students have never logged into their CPS.edu accounts before: Have the students login once through the "guest" mode of the Chromebook or (if your Chromebook isn't showing "guest mode") from a regular desktop computer (tip - take them all to the computer lab). They need to do this to accept the terms of their new CPS.edu Account. Once they've accepted the terms, they'll be able to use their cps.edu accounts to log into the Chromebooks.

Teach:
  1. Logging in: If this is the first time your kids log into their CPS Google accounts, you'll need to take this extra step before they can log into the device:
    1. Have students log into the Chromebook on guest mode. (If there is no guest mode, take them to a computer lab and have them follow steps 2-4 there once there)
    2. Instruct them to open the browser and navigate to google.cps.edu.
    3. Have them log into their CPS accounts and accept the terms.
    4. Once they have made it to the Gmail page, have them log out.
    5. They can now successfully log into the Chromebook.
  2. Chromebook 101: You can use your doc cam to guide them, but here is a site with great resources to get ideas for how to do this. http://tinyurl.com/MollyChromebookBlog

Other things to consider:
  1. Unplugging / plugging in the devices - getting a routine

  3. Creating a Google Site. Here is a video to help you get started.
